Benjamin Ralph Sewell, 95, Hillsboro, formerly of Jackson, passed away suddenly on Feb. 25 in Greenville, SC. Ralph was born May 5, 1921 on Frozen Creek in Breathitt County and was the son of the late Johnny Sewell and Angie Pence Sewell. He was a graduate of Breathitt High School, Lees College and held a Master's Degree from the University of Kentucky. Ralph was a school teacher in Breathitt County before becoming an executive with the Ashland Oil Company from which he retired in 1983. He was a veteran of WWII and saw action in New Guinea and Luzon where he received the Pacific Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the WWII Victory Medal. Ralph was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Minta Johnson Sewell and son, Steve Sewell. He is survived by daughter, Lois McManus and husband, Tim, Hillsboro; son, Gary Sewell and wife, Terri, Jackson; daughter, Rebecca Kelly and husband, Tom, Orient, OH; daughter, Amy Wriston and husband, Hubert, Hillsboro; and son, Mike Sewell, Hillsboro; as well as thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Ralph also leaves behind his beloved fiancé, Faye Barnett Barker, Greenville, SC, formerly of Breathitt County.
Visitation will be Friday, Mar. 3, 5:00 pm. Funeral will be Saturday, Mar. 4, 1:00 pm with Rev. John Bunn officiating, at the Breathitt Funeral Home in Jackson.
