Cliff began working for the local newspaper at the age of fourteen as a type setter. He graduated from Morehead High School in 1939, where he excelled in basketball. He used this experience to encourage children the value of learning how to swim and organized opportunities for them to learn how. In 1941, Cliff joined the United States Army and served his country during World War II.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, he lived in Pasadena, California, where he attended Pasadena City College and studied Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Overseas Craftsmen Association. This provided many experiences which included working in Hollywood and overseas.
Returning to Morehead in 1970, he contributed to the community with various projects, including Fountain Square. He and Christine were owners of Pine Grove Framing and Gallery of Fine Arts. He was a longtime competitor in the Kentucky Senior Games, winning many Gold Medals over the years. He was an active member of Morehead Men's Club, Morehead Art Guild and Rowan County Senior Citizens (Golden Agers).
