Geneva Lyons Thompson Campbell, 89, died on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016. She was born in Mt. Sterling Feb. 12, 1927 to Hildred Barnes Duff and Richard Guerrant Lyons. She lived in Stepstone as a young girl and graduated from Bath County High School in 1944.
In the early 1950's she was a substitute teacher at many one room schools in Menifee County including Hawkins Branch, Goosetown and Dog Trot. As a single Mother at times she held three jobs simultaneously including operator of the entire Menifee County telephone system, Red Cross consultant, editor of the Menifee County News and finally the Menifee County Health Department. She was a founding member of the First Baptist Church, Frenchburg and supporting member of Northview Baptist Church, Lexington.
She moved her family to Morehead in 1957 to work for Kentucky Utilities in a position she held for several years while attending Morehead State University part time. Following graduation she taught at McKell High School in South Shore.
Her most satisfying career move was to vocational rehabilitation counseling with the Kentucky Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. During her very successful 20 year tenure she was recognized as counselor of the year, served as President of the Kentucky Rehabilitation Counseling Association, and was elected and served on the National Rehabilitation Counseling Board of Directors. Following retirement she was asked to return to train new professional staff.
Too much media fanfare, in 2000, she and her husband sailed a 39 foot boat built in Owingsville, down the Tombigbee to Isla Holbox, Mexico where they became part of a wonderful Island family and returned each year.
