Robert Edward Bennett Robert Edward Bennett, 82, of Wells Lane, Morehead, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2018, at St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead following an extended illness.
He was born March 13, 1936, in Alliance, Ohio, a son of the late John and Dena Wise Bennett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Maxine Reynolds Whitaker, Erwin Lee Reynolds, and Karen Theis, and maternal grandparents, Abraham and Matilda Katz Wise.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 22 years, Greta Bo Lewis Bennett; three children, Michael Scott (Charlotte) Bennett of Fayetteville, GA, Jeffery Mitchell (Kelli) Bennett of Indianapolis, IN, and Dena Diane Bennett of Jonesboro, GA; Greta's three children, David Wayne (Sam Tedder) Todd of Valrico, FL, Angela Bo LaPlace of the Virgin Islands, and Aleshi Jo (Darwin) Gregory of Morehead; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Other survivors include a brother, Harold Duane "Ben" Bennett of Norfolk, VA; a brother-in-law, John David (Arlene) Lewis; two sisters-in-law, Brenda (Jim) Wells and Lynn (Brian) Mollohan, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Following Bob's graduation from Alliance High School in 1955, where he ran track, played football, and served as yearbook photographer, he joined the Navy (instead of attending Ohio State on a full scholarship). A proud veteran, he served in Vietnam two years as a pilot and working with ATC. For the next 30 years, Bob enjoyed his career as air traffic controller and FAA supervisor. After this commitment, he was one of four Americans chosen by the U.S. Government to set up modern world radar systems for flight in foreign countries--Turkey (3 years), Iraq (2 years), Iran and Israel. He also earned a Bachelor of Law Degree at John Marshall University, passed the Georgia Bar, taught air traffic control classes at the University of Oklahoma, and worked in a supervisory position at Air Control Technical Center in Absecon, New Jersey.
Bob was an enthusiastic, energetic volunteer for many causes. He became a member of Masonic Lodge No. 590 in Hapeville, Georgia, in 1972 and affiliated with Morehead Lodge No. 654 as a dual member in 2006. A 32nd degree Mason, he served as Master of the Morehead Lodge in 2006. Through the years, Bob had been active in the Scottish Rite, Shriners, VFW, and American Legion Post 126. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed crossword puzzles, and watching Georgia Bulldogs football (when UK was not playing).
Bob was a loyal member of the Morehead United Methodist Church.
A celebration of life will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, November 8, 2018, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Aaron Mansfield and Dr. J. D. Reeder officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors presented by Morehead American Legion Post 126.
Pallbearers: Darwin Gregory, Matthew Gregory, David Wayne Todd, Matt Oesch, Kevin LaPlace II, Jeffery Mitchell Bennett, Michael Scott Bennett, Brian Mollohan, John David Lewis, Thomas Reed Lewis, Ted Pass, Bobby Pettit, and Carl Lyons.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. by Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Morehead United Methodist Church, 227 West Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351.
