Ruth Jeannine Greene Howard, age 81 of Sandy Hook, passed away Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017 at the Elliott Nursing & Rehab in Sandy Hook.

She was born Nov. 18, 1935 in Elliott County, a daughter of the late Dr. William Code and Amanda Susan White Greene.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by two daughters, Winnie Sue Gevedon and Lana Jo Pennington; one sister, Elaine Conley; three brothers ,Dr. Delmaine Greene, Dr.John Frank Greene and Dr. William Code Greene II.

Mom loved her children, her grandchildren and all her family. The father of her children, Wendell Pennington, passed away Sept. 2007. She owned and operated the original Frosty Freeze until it was lost to a fire approximately 1971. When her brother-in-law, Percy Pennington, rebuilt a new Frosty Freeze she was the first employee there. She was called Nana Nean not by only her grandchildren but by all the children in our family. Many of whom she babysat for. Mom was a strong person, being able to carry on even after the early deaths of her daughters, Winnie Sue and Lana Jo. She was an excellent cook, a meticulous house cleaner until the horrible disease of dementia began to slowly but surely take our mom away. Even then she knew her children and grandchildren she continued to make funny faces to make them laugh. She spent the last 7 years in Elliott County Nursing and Rehab where all the nurses came to love her. While spending time with her every day when she got sick we came to realize the nurses and CNAs were her family as much as we were.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Vaughn and Vickie Pennington of Sandy Hook; Wendell and Mary Pennington of Huntington, West Virginia; one daughter and son-in-law, Edna and Joe Gagliano of Morehead, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Deana Harding, Jonathan (Tara) Pennington, Caitlin Fannin, Taryn Fannin; six great grandchildren, Landon Harding, Braden Tompkins, Asher Pennington, Hadassah Pennington, Selah Pennington, James Pennington.

Funeral services were held 1 pm, Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017 in the Chapel of Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home with Brother Keith Watters officiating. Burial followed in the Elliott County Memory Gardens in Sandy Hook.

Friends visited from 6 pm to 8 pm on Saturday and after 9 am on Sunday until the service hour at the funeral home.
